The immense excitement caused by the movie "Secretary" is due to its quirky yet unexpectedly real characters. Real characters are hard to come by in Hollywood, and we recognize this merit when we see it. After having watched the film, you might let out a sigh of relief , signifying that you, indeed, have been dealing with "normal" people; the difference is that you will quickly question that assumption, as the movie will raise some questions.
When the movie starts, Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) just got out of a mental institution. Lee has so many serious problems with self esteem and self love, that she battles a history of self mutilation; do not be surprised to discover her first aid kit, though, which she diligently uses to repair the bodily damage she’s inflicted upon herself. That’s how she is. Her therapy didn’t do much, but life has to go on. She enrolls in a typing class which will qualify her to become the "secretary" of the perfect "Mr. Grey" (James Spader), a lawyer.

Some scenes announce a potential S&M relationship, where Grey is the "S", and Lee is the "M". The courtship (!) and the prelude are a game. In it, Mr. Grey comes up with more and more difficult demands which, if they are not satisfied, Lee’s underperformance is consequently punished. But let’s not feel too bad for Lee, as we can see how she deliberately makes errors. Yes, it does get to that point!

The "Grey" character is "deliciously thrilling" (not "sinister", but "deliciously thrilling"). "Lee" could be disarmingly common, were we not to be preoccupied with her cuts and bruises. She appears to be so "disarmingly common" though, that you might forever be tempted to look for hidden signs of "Lee Holloway" on your secretary’s skin. Jeremy Davies is also fabulous, despite his being pathetic in his relationship with Lee.

This is not a movie you can watch with your family of aunts and uncles, or with members of older generations. It does have some frontal nudity and some X-rated moaning.
But it is a charming movie filled with great humor. While you’re watching it you know you’re dealing with a delicate and sensitive issue, so if someone walks in on you, you will not feel as if you were caught flipping through a porn mag. The film’s ending cannot please everyone, as it is not a movie for everyone; but its metaphoric message will certainly make you vibrate to some extent.

Oh, and if you start itching for a red marker to make some corrections, it might just be time you got yourself a secretary.
