What does a Chinaman, a Dutch dude, a Danish guy and a Romanian called “Hulub” all have in common? Well, firstly, they’re all cool artists. Secondly, they all found a home for some of their art in an unconventional space: a great, ginger-bread looking white house with silver awnings behind the
Astronomical Observatory.
Open the wooden door, climb up three little steps and to the right and left of you there’s a melange of international art combined with simple, colorful, and ingenious design.
Serigraphy, lithography, oil painting and arguably pure graffitti make for different techniques used in the art displayed at "maarten’s gallery". This place has a magic way of harmonizing “opposite sides of a spectrum” by putting together otherwise hard-to-match textures and concepts: fiery orange organza and Venetian blinds, wood and black stone floors, lucite chairs and straw bundels used for seating areas, old Romanian ceramic heating fireplaces and a high tech stereo system playing jazzy tunes.
We photographed this mean looking face and asked the curator who in the world would buy something like this. She offered a great suggestion: “this is a great gift for a boss who has a sense of humor!”.
Well, the gallery attendants surely do have a sense of humor, and they will likely give you a friendly embrace and treat you to a
vodka while you browse through and wonder how you can spend your 700 Euros alotted for avant-garde art.
