I think that those of us who love the „Graham” bread should start a club, just like those who
love Trabant, those who love riding
Harley Davidson
, the butterfly collectors or like those who dream of marrying
J.Lo
.
The „Graham” bread offers a unique culinary experience, which Romanians, a people nurtured for hundreds of years with "eat it with bread", will always appreciate. Not to mention that it's also very healthy given the grains and the flour that's mixed in it. It's simply damn good! It's more compact than the regular loaf, more filling than the communist version called "intermediara", the fiber is stronger than the one found in the regular toast and, without a doubt, its personality has more character than the pita bread. Sitting pretty on a Romanian bakery shelf, the „Graham” bread is the olive skinned beauty amongst a sea of pale faces - how could you not choose it, how could you not bite, ever so gently, from it?
The problem with the „Graham” is the same we have with any other Romanian product. I bet you've noticed how the „Rucar” Swiss cheese has at least six different tastes depending on the producer. The Bucharest "Rucar" is not similar with the one from Slobozia, which has nothing in common with the one from Satu Mare, which is totally different than the one from Bradul. This is Romania: you never know what you're buying even when you know precisely what you're buying. Just like Forrest Gump's mother used to say about life applies perfectly to the Romanian local products: life is like a box of chocolates- you never know what you're gonna get. The same goes true for the Graham bread. It is so different from store to store and from producer to producer that it's sometimes impossible to be sure that they belong to the same bakery range.
Therefore, for the connoisseurs as well as for those who want to give "Graham" a chance, I recommend the Graham bread at the bakery in Piata Gemeni (old Galati). Warning: this bakery is not to be confused with the one inside the veggie market; it is the one facing the street, with generous "termopane" and big white frames which, if you look outside, reveal the very famous Tram number 5. Here the „Graham” bread is 5.500 Lei and, believe you me, it's worth every little crumb.
