If you liked A beautiful mind, then chances are you will also like Proof (Dovada). It’s a film that shouldn’t be missed for at least three reasons.

1. It’s a rare score of talent, inspiration and intelligence. Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, (one of those line ups that you cannot possibly comment on because it speaks for itself) come together for the cinematic version of one of the best American plays written in the past 10-15 years: „Proof” by David Auburn, directed by John Madden. John Madden also cast the superb Gwyneth in the famous „Shakespeare in Love”. In 2002, Paltrow played the same role a whole season on London’s West End, the staging being then done by Madden, as well.

2. This is a film where the minds and souls of the characters reach such an intensity, that truth can actually be clearly seen. And since you see it, you still ask yourself if that’s enough, and if it needs to be proven further.

3. The story can only happen amongst highly intelligent people. And the fact that such a hollywood cast, playing roles based on a text that won a Pulitzer and a Tony, managed to become such a non-hollywood film, is an accomplishment in and of itself.

The Romanian translation is not great, thus risking the loss of underlying tension for the non-English speaker. For example, you must be familiar with the century old competition between the two Illinois universities, University of Chicago and Northwestern University, in order to get how a top UC professor feels when his daughter wants to study his subject right at NU. But even if you miss these details, the film is excellent. Also, keep in mind that „proof” could mean ”evidence”, as well as ”mathematical demonstration”. The story banks on the same double entendre. Last but not least, for those who’ve passed through the University of Chicago campus, then watching this movie is a duty.
