You know the type: she’s ravishing in her suit or just simply irresistible in her cargo pants. You look down to either her strappy sandals or her flip-flops and you’re left with a puzzled look on your face: ”what’s up with the orange duck feet????"
Explanation: if you take care of your skin and mind your overexposure to the UV rays, you’re doing the right thing: you’re staying away from skin cancer risks. But if you like the tanned look and want to achieve it by using a self tanner, you might be punished in a harsh way: you risk coming out of the self tanning cubicle looking like an orange. It could happen to anyone, so don’t laugh too hard when you a case of it

So what are some of the steps you need to take in order to prevent an excess of chemical interaction at your skin level?

1. Before applying the self-tanner you must exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Since the tanner works by darkening the pigment on your upper layer of skin, you need to make sure your skin is as even as possible.
2. Try to have a professional apply it.
3. If you do it yourself, use long strokes, watch yourself in the mirror and use moderation.
4. Keep in mind self tanners work with a particular chemical called DHA which has a particular smell. The self tanner scent is specific and it usually lasts as long as the actual color.
5. Dryer and rougher area of your skin tend to get darker, so use caution and apply less product on your knees, elbows and around your ankles. Also, do not forget to wash your hands very well.
6. If you find yourself in a disaster, find a solution based on glycolic acid, exfoliate with a loofah, and count the days: the tanners usually go away after a week.
May we suggest you resist the temptation of trying to self tan before an important event, however tempting it is to look golden. The risk level, in this case, is elevated to… ”orange”.

Self tanning can be achieved in professional salons through a solution sprayed on by a special device. “Psst!” recommends Clarins self tanners, products also endorsed by The Skin Cancer Foundation.
