The Mariuca phenomenon is something that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Its inception is traced in the 70’s in Zambia (yes, that’s where it came to life!), it moved through exotic Provence, and it now resides in the heart of Bucharest. It usually lasts an incredible 5 hours, time in which she appears fragile like a daffodil in the morning sunshine, her touch angelic, managing to be firm and light, relaxing and alerting... all at the same time. As the protagonist of the phenomenon in question, Mariuca speaks to you in the softest tone possible, and with “iubito” or “scumpule” insterted after every two words. She knows no other way but to concentrate her entire mind and body to create a treatment that would possibly surpass everything you’ve ever experienced in the skincare realm. You’ve guessed it: Mariuca is an aesthetician and her playground is the salon at Lido, the hotel with the most beautiful abandoned pool.

Whatever your skin concern might be or if you just plainly want a pampering session, you’re in for a unique experience. Do not try to compare it to anything else; you simply can’t. Here’s why, and we mean it in the most positive way:

* Call in advance to make an appointment, but please, just to be sure, keep in touch to confirm that your treatment starts when it’s supposed to. We don’t want to scare you and say that some people were known to gladly keep busy during a 2-hour delay just to get in on her tight schedule, but be advised that might happen. What I do is I tell her to call me precisely when she’s absolutely 100% ready.

* Once you’re laying on the bed, let her be the judge of your skin’s condition and need for care. She will carefully select from the zillions of pots, tubes and bottles, and use about 17 different potions that each do a magic trick for your skin. You just lay there and be mesmerized at the cottage cheese mask, eucalyptus/maple scrub, and the scent of Dead Sea cleansers. What left me in complete awe was the point at which she announced that she’s going to spread real silk fibers onto my skin. A minute later I felt little spider threads caressing my skin, followed by some liquidy drops that melted the fibers; Mariuca’s fingers got mixed in the quick weaving dance, while pure excitement was overtaking my relaxed being.

* Her application of product and massage techniques are particular and involve a lot of energy exchange and focusing on your chakra centers. You might get startled when feeling butterfly wings flutter across your face or when her hands reach right above your stomach, but just enjoy the feeling of being held in a motherly embrace.

* Depending on your request, Mariuca does everything from trimming your brows and your other fuzzy areas, to permanent tattooing, makeup application, and exquisite facial treatments, while Romantic FM plays the best selection of songs I have ever heard (or maybe that’s how charmed I was).

As mentioned earlier on, her ritual is not a short one, nor should you sell yourself short and want it to be reduced to a regular 1 or 2 hours. You might want to never come back from where she sends you anyway, so why not spend as much as possible in the land of zen?
