We're not sure if we should keep this for ourselves, but we decided to at least share it with you: apparently -and please don't breathe a word about it- gossip is OK. No, really! We didn't believe it either, but it seems that this was proven by experts, and it now just escaped out of their hi-tech
labs.
We asked
around and... guess what? The future of
business might be gossip because it makes us perform better! But if anyone
asks, you didn't hear it from us. Here it goes:
The
researchers have discovered that gossip is
the essential element of our
socialisation. Gossip is the human equivalent of primates' social
grooming. It increases the production of endorphin and boosts the
immune system. This would indicate that gossip, far from being a
trivial pastime, actually performs a vital and socially therapeutic
function.
It was interesting to also find out that men gossip for just as long and about the same subjects as women, but
tend to talk more about themselves.
Only about five per cent of gossip-time is devoted to criticism and
negative evaluation of others - but this 'negative gossip' has clear
social benefits in terms of rule-learning and social bonding.
