New York has 5th Avenue, London has Bond Street, Tokyo has Ginza, and Bucharest has Calea Victoriei. But when you want a little less conventionality, you check out Spring Street in Manhattan, Sloane Street in London, or Omotesando in Tokyo.
So what would be the equivalent of that second type of street in Bucharest?

It’s hard to say at this point, as our city is still trying to find its identity and claim it strongly. Still, we couldn’t resist a certain street, which looks promising, has an air of selective popularity and could become an attraction. The street in question is Ion Campineanu Street, stretching between Calea Victoriei and Nicolae Balcescu Blvd.

If you start walking down on it from Calea Victoriei, you have the Union International Center on your right, at #11; here you can have coffee and desserts at Da Vinci or pick up a luxurious writing instrument at Mont Blanc.

Across, at #12, the Martina Roversi store has feminine clothing with a twist. Next door, at Caresse Shop, men can have exclusive access to business attire with the Boucheron-Paris label endorsing the garments (too bad, however, that the service is not yet where it should be).

Casa Italia, Toto and Bloom offer interior design and artsy choices for your apartment, ranging from very modern furniture to traditional Asian inspired artifacts.

If you want to take a break and the Italian Da Vinci doesn’t appeal to you, you can try the French Bakery, the second of its kind and a much bigger version of the one on Benjamin Franklyn Street.

As you’re reaching the end of the street, there’s Nana Cosmetics on the right. This store hasn’t decided on its identity, look and variety yet, but you can pick up Cartier parfumes and some exclusive ones that no other place in Bucharest has.

And speaking of identity, the lack of it is certainly not a problem for the store on #7, La Bottega del Vino. As The Hilton and The Marriott will also tell you (since they also get some in their restos), the wines you find here are the finest of the Italian kind. Luce, Danzante, Frescobaldi and Attems ring a bell to the connoisseurs, but in case you want to find out more or make an impressive gift to someone, walk in and get schooled on the wonderful world of wine.
As you walk out of this store, take a last look at the storefront; I know you will smile, for it speaks about what this street is, and about what it may become.
