If you ever wished to just vanish from your current life scenario but could not (and would not) do it for more than a weekend, we might have something for you. And it’s closer than you would imagine.
No, don’t think Amsterdam, Sinaia, Sf. Gheorghe, or some other destination that your friends would say: “Oh, yeah, been there…” to.
Here’s what you do: you get on your car and you drive towards Brasov. If you’re already guessing we’re taking you to los montagnos, you’re right. Say you’re driving from Bucharest, then you’re passing through Predeal, and you’re picking the route to Rucar-Bran. You drive through Bran and you turn your head away from the castle, you pass Tohani and Moeciu, and once you see Fundata, you’re almost there. Watch out for a very small sign pointing to Fundatica and once you see it, you make an abrupt turn towards the direction of the arrow. A very long 2km into the mountains will expose you to unbelievable scenery, green grass, farm animals, Swiss chocolate-like snow covered peaks, and a lodge called
Piatra Alba.
The lodge’s manager, Aida, is a Bucharest socialite-turned-into-a-Manon-of-the-Springs-goddess, and the place radiates with her magic touch. Piatra Alba has a very warm, cozy and familiar air to it, so don’t expect to have your room locked or be a stranger when you eat or watch a movie in the living room. Aida is a master of picking her guests and mixing the personalities who share the house, so you’re probably going to make friends while eating at the campfire or while you’re taking hiking trips around Fundatica.
Speaking of eating, the breakfast and lunch menus are traditional, with omelets, cold cuts, ciorba, steak, and papanasi or clatite. But for dinner, Aida is experimenting with exotic recipes; she’s left us head over heels with a grouper stuffed with a mixture of breadcrumbs, lime, cinnamon, and parsley. What’s also amazing is the water; the source is a spring that’s the most delicious tasting water we’ve ever had!
So enough said: go there and get dizzy with the air, take books to make you feel good about catching up on your reading, and see if you can bring someone special to have until the end of the world.
