My friend insists that as far as movies are concerned, nothing equals the experience offered by a state-of-the-art movie theatre. The soft chair, darkness, a dominating big screen, and surround sound- all creating an all enveloping emotion, one that mysteriously lifts you up like you’re E.T. bicycling towards the moon, but actually reaching far inside your soul. You get the point. So my friend says that this sort of experience is only possible within the boundaries of a movie theatre; only there a movie is a movie.
I beg to differ, and by doing that I contradict quite a few people, die-hard film fans included. I love film; maybe not more than an aficionado, and certainly not as fanatically as my friend, Nae Caranfil , but enough to watch a movie with the pure conviction that it is, indeed, an art. Even though it has no muse. (Remember Iosif Sava, with his classic stature and unique voice saying: « What sort of art is the art of film making? It simply does not have a muse. Art without a muse is impossible. » ?) Well, yes, I believe that filmmaking is an art. But that it could only fully be understood in a dark room where the moving light shoots above our heads, is something I don’t get.

I have seen some of the best movies ever while lounging in my living room sofa, or while my elbows were resting on my desk. A lot of my most exhilarating experiences with this art were lived at home or at a friend’s house, with the help of a VCR or a DVD player. That’s how I forever fell in love with « The Godfather », « Amadeus », « One flew over the cuckoo’s nest », and « Modern Times ». In a house, and not a theatre, did I grow to admire Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, Natalie Wood and Naomi Watts. On the small screen of the TV, or recently, my laptop, I have watched Chaplin’s silent features, Forman’s Praguiean films, Fellini’s remarkable sense of aesthetics, Bergman’s metaphysical sophistication, Bunuel’s pointless craziness in « Un chien andalou », and so many others.

That emotion caused by a close contact with a work of art comes to life in your living room, as well, I assure you. I highly doubt that I failed to catch the subtleties or the entire meaning of a flick, just because I didn’t go to the movie theater. Bless the tapes and the DVD’s!
Admittedly, though, the film renting selection in Bucharest is not something outstanding. Unfortunately, the video stores are poorly stocked, and the iron 24-hour rule is reason for tension on anyone’s agenda. I can offer a suggestion: Videomax

This is what you do: you click on Videomax, you become a member, you pick a film, enter an address and a time you want the movie to reach you, and someone will bring you the tape or DVD to your door. And boy, do they come! Exactly within the small time frame they say they’d come, they show up. The same goes true for the following day: you go online to the site, you enter the time and place where you want to return the movie (it could very well be where you work!), and they come. Nice, civilized, prompt. A great service and my suggestion for anyone who wants to enjoy a movie from the unparalleled comfort of their own living room.
