The Internet can be thanked for many things: bringing people closer together, providing information at our very fingertips, supplying an endless stream of silly jokes and images, and helping lonely men the world over find, ahem, satisfaction. Yet, its biggest contribution to mankind must be allowing burgeoning fashionistas, overworked yuppies and lazy couch potatoes to obtain whatever their hearts desire through the magic of on-line shopping without ever leaving the comforts of their homes or offices.
Unfortunately, Romania has been traveling that particular stretch of the information superhighway in a rickety horse drawn cart. There are very few Romanian Internet shopping sites and the offerings of those that do exist are slim, at best. What’s worse, many international sites will refuse to deliver to Romania due to its unfortunate reputation as a haven for hackers and fraudsters.
Yet, there are those intrepid Internet entrepreneurs who will brave perilous customs, unreliable posts and credit card restrictions, and deliver their wares to the eager Romanian customers. We decided to provide a rundown of some of those sites avoiding the obvious (
Amazon.com) or those who claim to deliver here, but erect too many barriers to make the purchase worthwhile. These sites might not sell things that can be considered essential, but they are guaranteed to bring some fun and glamour into your lives. Be advised, however, that with most of these sites you may have to wait a while and then visit your local post office to collect your package.
www.agentprovocateur.com
The UK-based purveyor of what may be the world’s sexiest and glamorous lingerie will deliver its hot product to Romania. The site carries a number of lines of lingerie, as well as AP’s devastatingly sexy perfume, body products and accessories. If you sign up for their newsletter you will be notified about sales, which offer great values, as well as get to blush at their elegantly provocative photography and cheeky prose.
www.lipmedic.com
This may be the coolest of “who came up with this?” websites. It is devoted entirely to lip care products and carries a staggering range of lip balms from around the world. With most products priced well under 10 US Dollars, your shipping costs might trump the price of your order, but it will be worth it once you open the box of pretty, brightly colored containers and slather your winter-ravaged lips with sweet-smelling potions.
www.hqhair.com
A
UK website that is a heaven for product junkies. Although it is billed as a hair product site, HQ Hair carries a varied selection of exclusive skincare products, make-up, fragrances and accessories. Be careful though: once you’ve stocked up on super-posh Philip B shampoos, Pout glitter, Mario Badescu’s cult skincare, and Commandos underwear, you may well max out your credit card.
www.chocolatetrading.com
Any woman knows that the only thing that comes close to the divine pleasures of shopping is the miracle of chocolate. Indeed, even those of us who
*gasp* hate to shop, are helpless before its rich, dark powers. Chocolate Trading Co. – another UK site, is a chocoholic’s heaven. Carrying dozens of brands, including rare, hard to find artisan and/or organic chocolates, this site should never be browsed on an empty stomach. Start your mornings right with rich chocolate spreads, indulge in the world’s rarest single-bean chocolate bars, or warm yourself during cold Bucharest winters with hot chocolate made from flakes of finest chocolate.
www.cocoribbon.com
This on-line outpost of a cult and charming London shops sells lovely-if-pricey clothing, accessories and shoes, lingerie and swimwear, as well as a small selection of body care, candles and fragrances. This might be the best way of partaking of the cool London chick vibe, short of actually hopping on a plane.
This list is not all-encompassing, but it’s a good place to start. We will be providing updates when new and exciting sites come across our computer screens, and may we suggest that you do the same by writing to us at office@psst.ro . ‘Till then... “happy shopping” and Viva la Internet revolucion!
