We dream of the day when we can get cheap Sushi in at least one place in Romania, the day when Japanese food will not make those who haven’t tried it squint with displeasure, and we also hope that maybe we can walk into a Nic and find 6 neatly arranged sushi rolls in a take-away box.
While we dream of that day, the choice is limited to Kyoto and Asami in Bucharest and Tokyo in Cluj, where your taste buds are modestly teased and your pockets deeply assaulted.
Or, there’s Benihana at Howard Johnson; we give you a bright and happy green light: go there and enjoy a modern Japanese culinary experience.
It’s not a traditional setting (like Kyoto tries to replicate, but fails to), and it’s not the Japanese fast food-like resto some of us know from the U.S. What it is is a contemporary Asian theme design, stylish without being austere, and serving Japanese food
sans surprises. There’s sushi and sashimi, there’s agedashi tofu, soba noodles, gyoza, chicken yakitori and beef teriyaki, and, of course, the theatrical performance of the chef: the teppanyaki experience. If you wondered what’s with the “heart on fire”, here’s the twist: your rice will not bore you with a quiet presence on the right side of your dish, but it’ll first be shaped like a heart, cooked in front of you, catapulted up in the air and sprinkled in a Japanese bowl. And another reason for celebration: Momotaro san, the only sake based cocktail available in the whole wide Romania.
The prices are more affordable than Kyoto’s, with drinks and a dinner for two bringing your bill to around 70 Euros.
