For those who admire the
Dada style (not the movement declared by
Tzara, but the pieces found in the store bearing the Dada name, in Piata Amzei), this is some good news; for the rest, this is yet another finding on the colorful map of Bucharest: DADA Bistro.
On Matei Voievod 94 bis, a stone throw away from
The Film and Theatre Academy, the clothing style that firmly established itself for many years, is now entering the culinary world. And that’s because, in reality, one’s personal tastes cross fashion and gastronomical boundaries- this is what the founders of DADA Bistro’s intuition seems to entail. Consequently, a young lady who likes the Dada clothing, will be very happy to eat at DADA Bistro, because she surely sees the invisible thread linking the clothes and the DADA menu - they are, in fact, different manifestations of the same style. I’m not a fashion critic, nor am I the Bursucul Gastronom from the
Academia Catavencu, but you get what I mean, right?
The menu at DADA Bistro has strong Italian accents (a lot of good pasta there), but it also offers some great surprises: a few restaurant exclusive dishes based on recipes characterized by Dada imagination and boldness, such as rice with spinach and mint. But the most notable feature of the place is the interior design. The ceiling is labyrinthic, with calm and indirect lighting. The tables and chairs are delicate and transparent, almost fragile. The plates also have an unusual look: the traditional „circular” theme is replaced by a „squarrish” one (if in fact, there is such a word as „squarrish”). The salamander motif, dear and close to the heart of the Dada lovers, can also be found here: an irregular and lazy mosaic is snaking around the window seal, seeming to be on the verge of changing its color any minute.
The stamp of originality comes from the fact that, within the restaurant, clothes and accessories are exposed on fixtures in a much more appropriate space than the small boutique on Tache Ionescu Street. The Dada clothes are right within your eyesight, the staff is kind and helpful, so you have no reason not to pair up your lunch or dinner with a short shopping round. Or vice-versa.
We’d like to warn you against the drawing with the fish hit by hysteria that takes up an entire wall, or the painting with a hairy boar’s head; maybe they’re not the best choice for a sophisticated place, where people eat and converse while relaxing. But all in all a visit to DADA Bistro is required for those who want to be on top of what else is going on in Bucharest. A visit here is also a loyalty test for the Dada fans and a place to keep in mind if you want to reinvent shopping. DADA Bistro is open for breakfast and lunch, as well, and it might offer a lot of other many wonderful things, which, because of my naughty friends I surely missed noticing. Regardless, in a round of eating vs. shopping, the winner will always be Dada Bistro.
