I always felt that our dear Paris of the East was not properly equipped with enough great cafés to be doing justice to its nickname. But let’s agree on what I mean by a “great café”: amazing coffee, plenty of people watching, interesting snacks, prices that won’t jeopardize my monthly trips to the
Seychelles, low smoke levels, cool atmosphere; I’d say that’s reasonable, wouldn’t you?
And now that we agree on what a “great café” is, how many do you know in
Bucharest?
If you haven’t yet checked out
Grand Café Galleron, you might want to do that before you start counting what your favorites are.
On the outside, this place looks like the townhouse you wish you had. Once inside, each room has a different theme (so all your friends can find a spot they fit in), enhanced by super high ceilings, crown mouldings, cozy wood floors, antique looking furniture, and leather seating. Grab a high chair in the round alcove, and you’ll have a great panoramic view of the corner of Nicolae Golescu and Episcopiei Streets.
The kitchen offers interesting dishes: try the “onion soup” (which is a delightfully different taste than the local “ciorba”), the “escargots” or, if you have a soft spot for avocado, the “millennium salad” (you might want to go easy on the mayo dressing, and replace it with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, though). The desserts come in as stylish and chic as the place, completing the tableau with “L’Arc de Triumph” or “Tarte de Jazz”.
With staff that’s kept in check by a watchful managerial eye, Wi-Fi facilities, people watching galore and a refreshing international menu, Galleron is the “now” trendy Bucharest par excellence.
