It's a normal Saturday afternoon. The two of you go and pick up your favorite papers and glossies , and then head to your regular brunch place. The eggs are perfect, the grapefruit juice energizing and the conversation is just as tasty. How can it not be when he's just as good at gossiping about fashion and design as you are?!
You then pick a 3pm movie which fills in the afternoon. At 6pm, when he's driving away from the cinema, instead of going his usual way, he takes a detour. You notice. You ask: “babe, are you experimenting? Why are you going this way? My ass hurts from the bumps...”
He smiles: “oh, shut your face. You're in good hands.”
And he drives you through Unirii, going towards Tineretului. You think he wants to take a walk in the park; how sweet... But no, he turns at Sincai, he makes another right, and then you see a one way alley that's a dead end. Although the sign doesn't allow, he ignores it and drives through the most charming old Bucharest street. A minute later he pulls into a driveway in front of an elegant fortress with winding letters spelling Carol Parc Hotel.
Is this for real?
What follows is a dream come true: check in, champagne, a wonderful view, a sleepless night, a late waking. The room has an old English wallpaper feel, the curtains are heavy and rich in colors, the bed is royal, the toilet paper is black and heavenly scented, the shower gel is Bulgari, the TV is flat and it makes for a good diversion for eventual breaks in the program, the furniture is of heavy wood that raises the bar to a members-only club air, the floors are covered by exquisite carpets... reminding you of a luxurious era of chivalry and pompous femininity.
When Sunday night comes and your superstar treatment fades into the horizon, what will probably be left is another brick in the wall of your togetherness, a memory that's got “unforgettable” all over it, and a bill that's almost certainly a drop in the ocean.
