I'm not sure if City Hall is truly aware of this, but as we wrote before, Ion Campineanu Street is becoming the Rodeo Drive of Bucharest. Smaller, but more charming (holding up to the European characteristic), certainly not so opulent, but surely just as
snobbish. And to prove this point, the newest addition to the street collection is the delicacy store "Comtesse du Barry".
As you walk in and into the refined and exclusive French realm of gastronomy, your intuition predicts that a discreet adventure awaits. And since the Italian cuisine rules in Bucharest ("it's much easier to cook Italian style"-my francophone friend tells me), la cuisine Francaise can claim its fame only through hits like
Comtesse du Barry.
Although its business relies on a small but exclusive clientèle, "Comtesse du Barry" can transform just about anyone into another person. Have you ever heard of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin? If not, you should look him up; his life was sensational and we owe him the famous phrase: "Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you who you are". You just can't deny the truth of that statement, because what we eat creates our biological structure as well as
our intellectual one. Moreover, there is a direct link between what we eat and with whom we eat, which itself is a defining characteristic.
Since we set the background we can now proceed to saying that, on one hand,
"Comtesse du Barry" could possibly be the salvation of those who are at the "beans and bones" level, but feel ambitious about surpassing it. On the other hand, it could definitely be a sure solution for those already in the "caviar and truffle" league, looking
avidly to escape the barbarian hamburger and "merdenea" invasion.
The store's ambiance is special- the music, the colors, the displays of delicacies, and especially the charm and skill of the couple who owns the store, Mr. and Mrs. Preotu.
Together they excel at creating a regal pleasure out of a visit at "Comtesse du Barry".
All poetry aside, "Comtesse du Barry" offers a subtle caviar selection, foie gras, truffles, French confissery, fine wines, champagne and cognac, and a multitude of other delights which
stimulate the lyric resources of our taste buds.
