After ’89, almost every Romanian has embarked on the lengthy journey of renovating his home. Some have installed “termopane” of the German kind (since everyone talks about how good they are); some have taken down their walls and repainted, using washable paints and sophisticated wall treatments. The more venturous types have daringly plopped a bar in the middle of the living room, in a sort of misplaced Western fashion, which, if seen in a regular city apartment can only inspire “kitsch” and certainly not “style, luxury and space”, as they had hoped to.
