Our grandparents as well as the legends say that the best our country has to offer lands at the closest market to the train station. More specifically, if you’re looking for the best cheese in Bucharest, the culinary "experts" (and us, too!) point to Piata Matache. White cheese, smoked or ewe cheese, sour cream or cottage cheese—you name it, they’ve got it. “They” are peasants who grow sheep, goat, cow and even buffalo, or their wives. The vast majority come from Transylvania.
What makes the trip to the market even more spectacular is that the visit will resemble an incursion into old Romanian tradition and local customs. The cheese, for example, is cut with a thread. Some villages still use this tool to cut the corn bread, thus preserving an old habit. And for those of you who are used to shopping at the hypermarket, do know that at Piata Matache you can ask for a taste of the stuff you’re buying, allowing the seller to proudly stand behind the product he markets. And that hits a spot for everyone, especially the Hagi Tudose fans...
